Mychal Bell will probably be convicted in juvenile court. If he is convicted, he will likely served some time due to his previous offenses. During his bond hearing, LaSalle Parish District Attorney Reed Walters pointed out that Bell was placed on probation until his 18th birthday — Jan. 18, 2008 — after an incident of battery on Dec. 25, 2005. After being placed on probation, he was adjudicated of three other crimes, the two in September and another charge of criminal damage to property that occurred on July 25, 2006. In other words, he was on probation at the time of the assault on Justin Barker at Jena High School. None of his previous convictions or the assault on Barker had anyything to do with the noose-hanging incident.
After the attack on Barker, the black students said they were angry because they overheard Barker discussing a fight between one of them and a 22-year-old white adult male at a private party. The allegations that Barker taunted them with racial slurs surfaced only after the Jena Six incidence drew national attention. Barker denies even speaking to the black students. Witnesses agree with Barker’s version.
It’s not surprising that Barker denied speaking to any of the black students.
It’s not surprising that a disproportionate number of black men are sentenced much more harshly than their white counterparts.
There is no excuse for violence and I’m not painting these kids as hapless innocents.
The fact remains that there was no earthly reason for the harsh conditions.
I have a good deal of experience dealing with racism and the law.
My family is in law enforcement in Texas. My own child has been a target of the local police in New England.
This case smacks of bias. There’s no way around it.
My father grew up in the south. I’m clear on my intent.
